Why is my tooth discolored?

October 10th, 2019

Tooth discoloration can be an annoying and unwanted companion, and it can feel embarrassing to deal with. However, teeth can become discolored over time, and there are a number of factors involved in causing this process. Unfortunately, your  discoloration is likely the result of your daily activities. However, there is hope! There are a few things you can do to fix tooth discoloration and get your teeth back in their top shape.

What Are the Different Kinds of Discolored Teeth?

There are two different types of tooth discoloration. Extrinsic discoloration happens on the outside of the tooth, called the enamel. Here, there can be stains from various foods and drinks. Enamel can show signs of wear through white streaks, yellow staining, brown spots, or small pits on the enamel. Intrinsic discoloration is another way that stains can show up on your teeth. Instead of affecting the enamel and exterior, this discoloration starts with the dentin, or the interior of the tooth. When the dentin becomes discolored, it shows up as a yellow or gray color.

What Causes a Discolored Tooth and What Can I Do About it?

A wide range of causes exist for discolored teeth. What you eat and drink can largely affect your teeth’s health. Darker drinks, such as coffee, or dark foods, such as blueberries, can all produce stains on your teeth. Tobacco, whether smoked or chewed, is another cause of tooth discoloration. Good dental hygiene is also important to keep your teeth white, even if you do not consume any of those staining agents.

Certain medications can also lead to stained teeth. Certain factors, such as high levels of fluoride in your drinking water or ageing, are out of your control, but can still be assessed at your appointment.
